A psychoeducational assessment is used to understand a student’s unique profile of strengths and weaknesses. It is typically conducted when a child experiences difficulty with learning, attention, behavior, socialization or controlling their emotions that are impacting the child’s ability to succeed in the academic realm. Results help identify possible learning difficulties, emotional or behavioral difficulties, as well as a child’s unique strengths and weaknesses. Parents will finally understand strategies to help their child learn at their maximum potential.
Evaluations will vary depending on the nature of the issue. In general, they consist of a diagnostic interview with the parents and child to understand the historical and current difficulties, (once parents provide written consent) an interview with the child’s teacher, behavior rating scales, as well as standardized measures. While every evaluation is tailored to the needs of the child, most consist of assessing intelligence, learning, processing, and emotional/psychological functioning.
Our team uses the most relevant and updated measures to provide accurate assessment and the appropriate treatment recommendations that will enhance children’s overall development. They work hard to understand the needs of the child in the context of the expectations of the family and the school. We believe it is crucial to understand the experience and expectations of the child, family, and school in order to help the child perform at his or her best.
Once the evaluation is complete, a feedback session is scheduled with the parents to discuss results, intervention recommendations, and a tailored strategy. The parent(s)/legal guardian receive the results via a written report. In most cases, a school conference meeting with teachers, parents, and evaluator is recommended, in order to share the results from the assessment and provide recommendations for accommodations in the classroom.
Our team provides evaluations in the areas of:

A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a qualified professional to identify a student's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, academic abilities, learning style, and emotional/behavioral functioning. It helps determine if the student has any learning or developmental challenges that might impact their educational performance.
Psychoeducational evaluations are typically conducted by licensed psychologists with specialized training and experience in assessing learning and psychological functioning.
A student may need a psychoeducational evaluation if they are struggling academically, experiencing behavioral issues, or if there are concerns about a potential learning disability, ADHD, or other developmental conditions.
The evaluation process usually includes a review of academic records, interviews with parents/teachers, cognitive testing, academic achievement testing, behavioral assessments, and observation. It aims to gather a comprehensive picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses.
The duration of the evaluation can vary depending on the complexity of the case. Typically, it takes several hours, spread across multiple sessions, to ensure a thorough assessment.
Parents can expect to gain insights into their child's cognitive abilities, academic performance, and emotional/behavioral functioning. The results will provide valuable information about the child's learning style and any areas that may need targeted support or accommodations.
Insurance coverage for psychoeducational evaluations varies, so it's essential to check with the insurance provider to determine the extent of coverage.
Psychoeducational evaluations are generally safe and non-invasive. However, some children may find the process emotionally or mentally challenging. Evaluators are trained to create a comfortable and supportive environment to minimize any distress.
The need for re-evaluation depends on the individual case. In some situations, periodic re-evaluation may be necessary to track progress or reassess the effectiveness of interventions.
